ANTI-AGING BREAKTHROUGH
Are You A Believer?

What do Lauren Hutton, Larry King, Rush Limbaugh,
Lindsay Wagner, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain, and Tina
Turner all have in common?
They use homeopathic medicines and believe they
work. Once an obscure "alternative", homeopathic medicine has gained prominence
in the United States over the last 25 years.
Homeopathic medicine is a treatment procedure
where the body's symptoms are examined and then treated with a minuscule
dosage of a natural substance. For example, a person suffering from allergies
might traditionally be treated with an antihistiminic chemical compound
to combat the histamine the body releases in allergic symptoms. Under homeopathic
therapy, a person with allergies might be treated with trace amounts of
naturally occurring substances which are thought to actually cause allergies
or allergic symptoms. In homeopathy, it is maintained that these incredibly
small doses have the reverse effect of alleviating the symptoms.
The main tenet of homeopathic medicine is the
Law of Similars. Also described as "like cures like", homeopathic remedies
take natural substances that would normally cause the symptoms being treated,
and then dilute the substance many times over with water or alcohol to
an extremely weak concentration. Homeopathic practitioners believe that
their remedies stimulate the body's immune system. Some maintain that the
substance retains the "essence" of the original despite being diluted up
to 30 times.
The second tenet of homeopathy is the Law of Infinitesimals.
This law explains the efficacy of the treatment despite the dilution of
the substance. Homeopathic practitioners believe that the more the remedy
is diluted, the stronger its effect.
As far ago as the fourth century BC, Hippocrates
noted that a substance that causes a healthy person to become ill can be
used as a cure. Paracelsus, a 15th century physician, also practiced this
particular aspect of homeopathic medicine, and the Chinese, Greeks, Indians,
Mayans, and Native Americans were also known to use the "Law of Similars"
in their medical treatments.
The man who is recognized as the father of homeopathic
medicine is Samuel Hahnemann, a German physician of the 18th century. Dissatisfied
with the mainstream medicine of his day, which often included violent and
painful invasive procedures, Hahnemann conducted experiments that led to
his formulation of the two basic laws of homeopathic medicine. Using himself,
his seven children, and other physicians as subjects, Hahnemann tested
hundreds of plants and minerals and these tests lead to his development
of the Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia and Materia Medica still in use today.
These and other "provings" also formed the foundation for the double-blind
clinical trial techniques we use today to test new therapeutic agents.
Homeopathy spread from Germany to France and the
Netherlands and eventually to Great Britain. It was first introduced in
the United States in 1825. Support for homeopathic medicine has remained
strong in Europe but has had its ups and downs in the United States. The
American Institute of Homeopathy was formed in 1844 as a result of homeopathy's
popularity in the mid-1800s. Support in the US began to subside towards
the end of the 1800s, and by 1950 was all but forgotten.
In the 1970s, homeopathy began to enjoy a resurgence
in the United States, although most mainstream medical practitioners have
always had difficulty accepting homeopathic medicine. It is the Law of
Infinitesimals more than any other homeopathic theory that some mainstream
medical professionals find hard to accept, especially as the dilution approaches
the point where there is practically none of the original substance left.
Their main point of skepticism is that no one knows exactly how or why
homeopathic remedies work. Some proponents believe their remedies stimulate
the body's natural tendency to heal itself, via feedback mechanisms or
immunologic responses. Others feel that homeopathic treatments restore
proper balance to a body knocked out of sync by illness or environmental
factors.
Some opponents have tried to have homeopathy regulated
or even outlawed. There are state and federal laws that ban the sale of
medicines that have not been proven safe and effective, however homeopathic
products are exempt from these regulations because they were given a special
exemption from the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act of 1938. The exemption
is based primarily on the assumed safety of the very small amounts of naturally
occurring substances used in these medications. Because of increased and
growing popularity of homeopathic formulations, in 1988 the Food and Drug
Administration (FDA) issued guidelines for their use.
The FDA's Compliance Guide 7132.15 states that
"Homeopathic drugs cannot be offered without prescription for such serious
conditions as cancer, AIDS, or any other requiring diagnosis and treatment
by a licensed practitioner. Non-prescription homeopathics may be sold only
for self-limiting conditions recognizable by consumers. [Their] labeling
must adequately instruct consumers in the product's safe use. Other regulations
preclude homeopathic formulations from containing active ingredients such
as are in conventional medicines; they must contain only minute concentrations
of ingredients consistent with traditional homeopathy; and they must be
labeled with at least one indication for their use.
These guidelines were not strong enough for many
opponents of homeopathy, however, and in August 1994, 42 opponents to homeopathy
gathered and filed a formal petition to try to force the FDA to impose
the same standards of efficacy on homeopathic drugs as it does on other
drugs. The FDA indicated that it would not examine homeopathy because they
had more pressing regulatory priorities. Importantly, the FDA also reported
that homeopathic remedies were considered safe and their efficacy had never
been disproved.
