Glucosamine HCL and Chondroitin Sulfate have been shown in studies to be supportive agents for the maintenance of healthy joint and cartilage tissue. As a person ages, the cartilage which cushions the joints often loses its ability to support healthy cellular growth. In addition, the synovial fluid which lubricates these joints also deteriorates. This condition, called osteoarthritis, often leads to rough bones which rub together and cause distress with every twist or bend.

Over time, the only option you have is to use nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). These preparations may cause side effects like slowing down the body's rate of cartilage replacement and actually destroying cartilage. Glucosamine HCL

What does it do? Glucosamine HCL provides the joints with the building blocks they need to repair damage caused by osteoarthritis or injuries. Specifically, glucosamine hcl provides the raw material needed by the body to manufacture a mucopolysaccharide (called glycosaminoglycan) found in cartilage. Glucosamine hcl may also play a role in wound healing.

Glucosamine stimulates the body's manufacture of collagen, the protein portion of the fibrous substance that holds joints together. Collagen is also the main component of the shock-absorbing cushion called articular cartilage-the white smooth surface which covers the ends of body joints-such as those in the wrist, fingers, toes, ankles, knees, hips and between the discs of the spine.

Chondroitin Sulfate 

What does it do? Chondroitin sulfate consists of repeating chains of molecules called mucopolysaccharides. Chondroitin sulfate is a major constituent of cartilage, providing structure, holding water and nutrients, and allowing other molecules to move through cartilage-an important property, as there is no blood supply to cartilage. Chondroitin sulfate also appears to help restore joint function in people with osteoarthritis, a finding confirmed in double blind research.

Chondroitin and similar compounds are present in the lining of blood vessels and the urinary bladder. They help prevent abnormal movement of blood, urine, or components across the barrier of the vessel or bladder wall. Part of chondroitin's role in blood vessels is to prevent excessive blood clotting remains unclear. However, whether supplements of chondroitin are able to favorably affect blood clotting. In addition, chondroitin sulfate may lower blood cholesterol levels. Older preliminary research showed that chondroitin sulfate may prevent atherosclerosis in animals and humans and may also prevent heart attacks in people who already have atherosclerosis.

Chondroitin sulfate can help form a coating on nasal passages. Perhaps as a result, researchers found that when chondroitin sulfate was sprayed onto nasal passages in a small group of snorers, the amount of time people spent snoring was reduced about one third in a double blind trial. No further studies have investigated the effects of oral chondroitin sulfate on snoring.

Chondroitin sulfate is classified as a type of glycosaminoglycan; it is rich in sulfur and is related to glucosamine. Glycosaminoglycans affect how the body processes oxalate-a substance linked to kidney stones. In one study of forty people with a history of kidney stones, 30 mg twice a day of mixed glycosaminoglycans reduced urinary oxalate excretion in fifteen days-a change that could drop the risk of stone formation. However, while experts believe that glycosaminoglycans effectively prevent formation of kidney stones in test tube studies, effects in humans have been inconsistent.

Where is it found? The only significant food source of chondroitin sulfate is animal cartilage.

Vitamin C

Also known as: Ascorbic acid

What does it do? Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin that functions as a powerful antioxidant. Acting as an antioxidant, one of vitamin C's important functions is to protect LDL cholesterol from oxidative damage.

Vitamin C is needed to make collagen, the "glue" that strengthens many parts of the body, such as muscles and blood vessels. Vitamin C also plays important roles in wound healing and as a natural antihistamine. This vitamin also aids in the formation of liver bile and helps to fight viruses and to detoxify alcohol and other substances.

Where is it found? Broccoli, red peppers, currants, Brussels sprouts, parsley, rose hips, acerola berries, citrus fruit, and strawberries are good sources of vitamin C.
